Building Japan’s Best Research Environment
Keisuke Okita
Head of the Animal Research Facility
What kind of instruments are the MRI and CT systems in the animal research facility?
They are essentially the same as MRI and CT imaging systems used in hospitals. They enable the three-dimensional analysis of organs and tissues inside the body. Whereas MRI is useful for observing the brain, heart, and liver, CT is suitable for viewing bones and lungs. With experimental animals, we utilize these devices to elucidate disease mechanisms and evaluate the effectiveness of candidate therapeutic compounds. Furthermore, when developing cell transplantation therapies using iPS cells, we use these instruments to assess the safety and therapeutic efficacy of transplanted cells.

Why are these instruments operated as shared equipment within CiRA?
Both machines are extremely expensive. It is essentially impossible for a single laboratory to purchase and maintain them. Therefore, we used generous donations from our supporters to acquire such instruments as common equipment. By creating an environment where all researchers can easily access these systems, we are helping accelerate their research.
What is the significance of using donations to introduce these instruments?
CiRA’s mission is the medical applications of iPS cells. We are fortunate to receive support from those who believe in our mission and contribute to it through donations. Introducing these machines with donated funds has greatly improved the quality and efficiency of our research. By utilizing this equipment, we can further accelerate research aimed at advancing regenerative medicine and developing treatments for intractable diseases.
