Announcement about ISSCR Guidelines
The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) updated their Guidelines for Stem Cell Research and Clinical Translation on May 26.
The guidelines were decided after consultation with an international working group of experts on stem cells, ethics, and law. Among the members of the group were CiRA Professors Jun Takahashi (Dept. of Clinical Application),
Misao Fujita (Uehiro Research Divison for iPS Cell Ethics; also a principal investigator at the WPI Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Biology (ASHBi)) and Mitinori Saitou (also Director of ASHBi).
The new guidelines address a number of issues related to stem cells, including their use in embryonic models, the generation of chimeric embryos, organoids, the 14-day rule, the genome editing of germ cells, and mitochondrial replacement therapies. They also address the commercial use of unproven stem cell therapies.
